Six questions before you buy any plugin

A short checklist covering formats, licensing, activation and the one question most people skip.

Plugin regret is common: a folder of tools opened once and forgotten. Six questions, asked before checkout, prevent most of it.

1. What job will it do in my next session?

Not "someday". Next session. If you can't name the track and the problem it solves, wait. A good deal will come around again, and often sooner than you think.

2. Does it run on my setup?

Check every layer:

  • Format: VST3, AU, AAX or CLAP. Your DAW decides which you need.
  • Operating system: including the specific version, and native support for your processor.
  • Host compatibility: some plugins have known issues in particular DAWs. Developer support pages and forums are your friend.

3. How is it licensed and activated?

  • Perpetual, subscription or rent-to-own?
  • How many computers can you activate at once?
  • Does it need a hardware key, an online check, or a companion app?
  • Can you move the licence if you change computers?

4. Can I try it first?

A trial period on your own material is worth more than any number of demo videos. If there's no trial, look for a refund policy that's actually written down.

5. What does it cost to keep?

Major version upgrades, required companion subscriptions, and expansion packs all add to the real price. Check the developer's upgrade history before you assume the next version is included.

6. What will I stop using?

This is the question most people skip. A new compressor should replace something, not sit beside five others. If it doesn't replace anything, ask whether you need it or just want it.

None of this means don't buy plugins. It means buy the ones you'll still be using next year.
